DNCB alternative treatment study starting

As of now, ACT UP will be carrying DNCB for distribution to area PWAs. We are asking for your last blood counts so we can chart and graph your progress as a community based research initiative. The reason we are doing this is because DNCB is the most widely used alternative treatment for HIV. We can provide whoever is interested in taking part in this with all the data available to date. We feel we can provide

square of 10 percent solution of DNCB to an area of skin. After 10 hours you wash it off. It's that simple. Two weeks later, you will apply a 2 percent solution to a different area of skin. After that you apply DNCB to a different area every week as mainte-

quite a bit of information with our own initiative into this promising compound.

DNCB-dinitro-chlorobenzene-is in wide use as a film developer. It is inexpensive and unpatentable, therefore, we will never see an NIH or pharmaceutical study into DNCB because nobody can make a profit off it so why spend money on research? (Another fine example as to why we need The AIDS Cure Project.) Too many promising treatments have fallen by the wayside for this reason. We cannot afford to lose DNCB simply because there is no profit involved.

Here's how it works: you apply a 2-inch

New support groups being formed

The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Centerof Cleveland is proud to help two new and very necessary groups get started.

One of these is a new discussion group for those who share in the challenges and growth of childhood sexual abuse survivors. For more information about this group, leave a message at the Center, 522-1999, with the best time to contact you. A regular meeting time and place will be mutually decided by those participating.

nance.

How/why does DNCB work? The premise behind the use of this stuff is all the dienetric cells in your skin (also called langshan cells) carry informa-

tion to the lymph system when there is a foreign agent present. In the presence of DNCB these cells activate and rush a message to the lymph nodes to make CD8 cells. (CD8 are the other component of your immune system.) Why are CD8 cells important? When we look at long term survivors of AIDS we see one common denominator, high CD8 counts. Even in the absence of CD4 cells, a person can have a decently functioning immune system. Not 100 percent but enough to sustain you.

The second is B-GLAD, an advocacy group for bisexuals, gay men and lesbians who are disabled. There is a form below to complete if you are a member of this community and want to be part of an anonymous phone network and support group. Send the form to the Center where it will be forwarded to the group's facilitators.

Note that these groups are not "Center groups" and will not be meeting at the Center.

research, let us remind you that we are using

a compound that you do not ingest, it's topical. The risk to the participants is virtually nonexistent, aside from some reddening at the application site and some itching. We will depend on the participants to provide us with the lab work from their regularly scheduled doctor appointments. We will be looking at overall health and an increase of CD8 cells.

If you would like to participate we are going to have room for 30 people to take part in this. The study will run for six months, at which time we will either con-

tinue for an additional six months or discontinue the study and release the results. We have already started with five participants. The DNCB will be provided free of charge to the participants. Anyone interested can call ACT UP at 621-2233 and ask for Joe or Marcos. If you do not want to be in the study we will still provide the DNCB at cost to anyone who wants it. The cost is $27 for a start-up kit and $20 for each additional kit. We are negotiating to get the maintenance kits for $16 which we will pass along to the buyer.
